Jacket product pages list the leather used, but that word alone does not tell you how the jacket will feel, wear or age. Here is what actually separates lambskin, cowhide and sheepskin so you can pick the right one.
Lambskin
Lambskin comes from young sheep and is the softest, lightest leather used in jackets. It drapes close to the body rather than standing off it, and it feels closer to a heavy fabric than to armor from the first wear. The tradeoff is durability: lambskin scuffs and stretches more easily than a heavier hide, so it suits a jacket worn around town rather than one that takes daily abuse.
Sheepskin
Sheepskin comes from mature sheep and sits between lambskin and cowhide. It has more body and holds its shape better than lambskin while still being noticeably softer than cowhide. Many biker jackets use sheepskin finished semi aniline, which keeps the natural grain visible rather than coating it in a heavy layer of pigment.
Cowhide
Cowhide is thicker and denser than either sheep leather, and it is the standard choice for a jacket that needs to survive real wear: motorcycle riding, work, or just years of daily use. It takes longer to break in and feels stiffer out of the box, but it resists scuffs and abrasion far better and develops a deep patina over years rather than showing wear as damage.
Side by side
- Softest, lightest: lambskin
- Best balance of softness and structure: sheepskin
- Most durable, heaviest: cowhide
- Best for everyday town wear: lambskin or sheepskin
- Best for riding or daily hard use: cowhide
Which should you choose
If you want a jacket that feels good the day you put it on and mostly gets worn over a shirt or a knit, lambskin or sheepskin will serve you better. If the jacket needs to survive a motorcycle, a job site, or years of rough use before it starts to show real character, cowhide is the one to buy. Neither is objectively better; they are built for different jobs.
